Why is it important?
Conserved among all mammalian species the structure is deduced to compartmentalize proteins that initiate sperm motility through membrane traffic.
Perspectives
The structure was first observed in 1909 with little known of its function until its isolation and protein characterization. Through a quantitative characterization of its protein makeup by tandem mass spectrometry and the localization of several of the characterized proteins by light and electron microscopy, the deduced function of the structure in the invitation of sperm motility through membrane traffic was found.
