Perspectives

This paper is the culmination of an enormous amount of experimental work (largely performed by Stefan Pauls) that has allowed us to get a better understanding of an intriguing paradox; that is how ultra-conserved regulatory sequences can continue to evolve new functions. By exploiting neighbouring regulatory potential, combined with minor tweaks within the core of the regulatory module, entirely novel enhancer properties can be acquired.
