What is it about?

We review the difficulties of developing species distribution models in the Neotropics, coming from the lack of comprehensive data on species distributions and the megadiversity of this region.

Why is it important?

This paper calls for using a code of good practice to develop species distribution models, and the need for more surveys when data is not enough.

Perspectives

This forum paper came out as a result of a forum where we realized that many times species distribution modelling tools where incorrectly applied in Brazil and other Neotropical countries. Models where based on insufficient data and using black-box overfitting tools that were many times not suited for the purpose of the research. We therefore aimed to provide guidelines to make an appropriate use of these tools, highlighting also the need of new additional data on species occurrences and more inventory work.
