What is it about?

The latissimus dorsi flap is a common procedure in breast reconstruction. However, it is typically designed to lay in a horizontal fashion instead of the potentially more attractive vertical orientation. We describe a vertical orientation to the inset of the latissimus dorsi flap, which we believe enhances the aesthetic result of breast reconstruction.

Why is it important?

Breast reconstruction is a life-changing event for victims of breast cancer. A good result can be a restorative experience for breast cancer patients. The vertical inset of the latissimus dorsi flap can potentially enhance the result of breast reconstruction and contribute to optimal breast reconstruction aesthetics.

Perspectives

Breast reconstruction, like any reconstruction in plastic surgery, should be informed by aesthetic principles to optimize the outcome for patients. This article provides a technique that can improve the results in breast reconstruction.
