What is it about?
Seroma is a common complication after breast reconstruction, so any device that decreases its incidence is a valuable addition to clinical practice. The barbed ribbon device uses a pattened suture anchor mechanism to decrease "dead space," or the space between tissue planes that can harbor seromas. By eliminating this space, it is possible that we can decrease seromas.

Why is it important?
Decreasing complications after any surgery is important to patients, especially the many breast cancer patients that desire reconstruction.
Perspectives
Value in healthcare is largely driven by good results with low complication rates, i.e. quality care. Therefore, mechanisms to decrease complications may be valuable additions to the surgical care we provide our patients and deserve exploration and study.
