What is it about?
The majority of metacarpal fractures can be treated nonoperatively, but surgery is indicated when fractures cannot be stabilized with an immobilization method such as splinting or casting. In 2010, a new technique was developed where an intramedullary screw is placed to stabilize metacarpal fractures. This study identified and evaluated all studies reporting on the outcomes of this new technique, and found it leads to excellent functional outcomes with a shorter recovery time.
