What is it about?
Breast augmentation is the most common aesthetic procedure today. Textured implants have historically been popular as they control implant position and have improved capsular contracture rates; however, the impact of texturing on longevity and clinical findings at explantation is still not clear. We used a retrospective chart review of 552 explanted breast implants to show that aggressively textured Biocell implants were explanted sooner than other implants at an average time from placement of 4.0 years. We also showed that the percentage of implants removed associated with implant performance failure was highest with Biocell implants at 85.4%. A large proportion of Biocell implants were associated with pain and unusual intraoperative findings. This information should complement the informed consent process when selecting an appropriate breast implant.
