What is it about?

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) allows for complete preservation of the nipple with mastectomy from breast cancer or increased risk of breast cancer. This procedure is more commonly being utilized today. However, oncologic and reconstructive outcomes for NSM performed for breast cancer or for increased risk of breast cancer has not yet been directly compared. We therefore performed this comparison in over 1200 NSMs. We found that rates of cancer recurrence with NSM are low; although slightly higher in cases for breast cancer, as expected. Rates of complications are likewise low; although slightly higher in cases for cancer. Overall, outcomes with NSM are promising as it offers patients excellent results.
