Why is it important?

Breast reconstruction is currently an inseparable part of breast cancer surgery in most of the western world. Large breasted woman has the added benefit of having the option to "mold" their breast tissue in a breast reduction pattern to achieve excellent aesthetic and symmetrical results right out of the operating theatre at the time of cancer surgery. Medium and small breasted woman present a unique challenge by not having sufficient breast tissue to achieve such a result. This challenge may be overcome by the meticulous planning of the cancer surgery and simultaneous plastic reconstruction using both native breast tissue and a small implant to achieve an excellent aesthetic and symmetrical result.

Perspectives

It's a pleasure to see how our reconstructive options expand to the point where we can offer safe, beautiful breast reconstructions for a large variety of breast and body shapes and sizes. The current publication validates our surgical intuition that excellent results can be achieved at the time of original cancer surgery when proper planning and consultation with a plastic surgeon.
