What is it about?

Nipple sparing mastectomy is becoming the modern standard to preserve a natural look for women affected by breast cancer or undergoing preventive mastectomy for genetic mutation (BRCA) risk reduction. Previously, women with very large or very droopy, sagging breasts were excluded from this benefit. This article describes a pioneering advancement that allows women with large, sagging, droopy breasts to have nipple sparing mastectomy and breast lift to produce transformational and beautiful outcomes after mastectomy.

Why is it important?

This article describes a pioneering advancement that allows women with large, sagging, droopy breasts to have nipple sparing mastectomy and breast lift to produce transformational and beautiful outcomes after mastectomy. Previous to this work, these women were often excluded from the benefit of nipple sparing mastectomy due to technical limitations of older reconstructive methods.

Perspectives

Our discovery of the regenerative power of natural tissue reconstruction is highlighted in the development of a technique to provide nipple sparing mastectomy for women who were historically not considered candidates for this procedure. The aesthetic improvements of breast shape and nipple position on the new breast are a testament to how far breast reconstruction has come for women facing mastectomy.
