What is it about?
Lateral neck radiography is often used as a screening tool in emergency departments for suspected acute epiglottitis. The qualitative radiographic signs have been mainly used. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of objective radiographic parameters to aid diagnosis of acute epiglottitis.

Why is it important?
Of various parameters, epiglottic width had the highest accuracy in acute epiglottitis diagnosis. Its accuracy at the base was 97.8%, which was slightly higher than 96.2% of the one at the tip.
Perspectives
Measurement of objective parameters including the epiglottic width on lateral neck radiographs for acute epiglottitis diagnosis is highly accurate and may be useful for screening diagnosis.
