Institutional Diversity in Plastic Surgery Research: A Collaborative Solution to Resource Limitations. Research advances in plastic and reconstructive surgery are mostly driven by academic institutions, which are largely supported by government funding through organizations like the National Institutes of Health (NIH). However, these traditional funding sources may be at risk due to political and financial instability. This study analyzes the leading plastic surgery journal to reveal publication trends. There is an increasing proportion of research publications that involve collaborations between academic institutions and private enterprise. With the proper protections and documentation of conflicts of interests, increasing collaboration may be a potential strategy for pioneering research advances in the face of decreasing resources.
