Febrile neutropenia in pediatric patients: a significant risk factor for augmented renal clearance

What is it about?

Augmented renal clearance (ARC) that has been defined as enhanced renal clearance has been recognized as a frequent phenomenon in the subsets of critically ill patients. ARC has been associated with subtherapeutic antibiotic concentrations; however, there is limited information regarding the risk factors for ARC in pediatric patients. Here we assessed the influence of the risk factors including febrile neutropenia for both ARC and vancomycin pharmacokinetics in Japanese pediatric patients.

Why is it important?

Augmented Renal Clearance is a recognized association with increased vancomycin clearance, an association also recognized in pediatric patients; the novelty in this manuscript is the occurrence in febrile neutropenic patients.
