What is it about?

This article briefly explains and validates a simple method to measure greater tuberosity displacement for fractures of the proximal humerus using only plain XR.

Why is it important?

This allows for surgical decisions to be made reliably without the use of CT in some patients. Thus decreasing the patients exposure to ionizing radiation. Also, plain X-rays are almost always available from the initial evaluation of the patient in the trauma bay. If you can accurately measure the displacement on XR, you can avoid the delay and expense of sending the patient out for another examination before making your clinical decision.
