What is it about?

Obesity contributes to venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized medical patients. The comparative risk of obesity in critically ill patients is uncertain. We compared 90 day VTE in obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2) critically ill medical patients receiving VTE prophylaxis with non-obese patients (BMI 17-29.9 kg/m2) of similar illness severity. We hypothesized obesity would increase 90 day VTE. The rate of VTE in critically ill medical patients remains high despite standard prophylaxis. However, obesity does not appear to increase VTE risk.
