What is it about?
This study evaluated very-low-birth-weight infants considered at double risk—defined by low cognitive-processing ability (measured by visual recognition memory) and low parental socioeconomic status.

Why is it important?
Using standard psychometric tests, we found these children consistently lagged in intellectual and language skills compared to peers not at double risk.
Perspectives
The findings suggest that assessing both processing ability and parental socioeconomic status offers a more effective way to identify developmental delays than relying solely on medical factors.
