What is it about?

Chest reconstruction surgery in transmasculine patients requires different assessment and different clinical documentation than breast reduction, although both surgeries are designed to reduce chest size in natal females. Failure to recognize the different indications and requirements for these procedures can lead to problems with both insurance authorization and patient care.

Why is it important?

Surgeons who do not work with many transgender patients may not know how to get their care covered.

Perspectives

The indications for chest reconstruction in transmasculine patients are different than for breast reduction in cisgender females. As such, in order to get these procedures covered by insurance, you need to provide information about psychological symptoms rather than, or in addition to, physical ones.
