What is it about?

Ankle fusion with free vascularized fibula autograft using a saphenous vein “extension cord”: a case series. In select high-risk cases of ankle arthrodesis, conventional techniques may lead to high incidence of failure due to a combination of multiple operations, high risk of infection, bulky and non-vascularized bone substitutes and poor soft tissue quality. In these cases of high-risk lower leg salvage we have performed anklle arthrodesis using an impacted free fibula flap from the same leg, using a saphenous vein “extension cord”. This allows for better immediate post-op recovery, better bony healing, and faster time to ambulation.
