What is it about?
While the proportion of kidney transplantation increases annually, the survival rate of transplant kidneys is not. One of the major causes is the long-term use of immunosuppressants. Nevertheless, little is known before the kidney damage caused by immunosuppressants. This study was initiated to identify the cause and to help in future treatment. Autophagy has recently been shown to play an important role in cell survival. This study suggests that Klotho is involved in the regulation of autophagy, and suggests the basis of Klotho treatment for kidney damage caused by immunosuppressive agents.
