What is it about?

Biological processes such as renal function are critically regulated by important factors notably hormones. In this study, we evaluated the contribution of two closely related steroid hormones, aldosterone and glucocorticoids that bind and activate the mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors, allowing gene expression involved in the regulation of renal sodium transport and the control of blood pressure. Using innovative techniques, we discovered that both receptors specifically interact with genomic sequences in a cyclical manner, yet with distinct dynamics that may account for the final biological responses. Our study brings new information on fundamental aspects of hormone-dependent gene regulation and should allow better understanding of renal and cardiovascular diseases.
