What is it about?
In this study, we identified that CENP-W interacts with two core components of SCFβ-TrCP1, CUL1 and β-TrCP1, and consequently reduces SCFβ-TrCP1 activity. Remarkably, this interaction is prominent during the G2/M transition, and CDC25A phosphatase, the essential CDK1 activator, substantially reduced in CENP-W knockdown cells. We propose that the new kinetochore component CENP-W may contribute to the timely activation of CDK1 by preventing a premature degradation of CDC25A by SCFβ-TrCP1 ubiquitin ligase at the G2/M boundary.

Why is it important?
CENP-W inhibits CDC25A degradation by destabilizing the SCFβ-TrCP-1 complex at G2/M. CENP-W participates in cell cycle regulation by modulating SCFβ-TrCP1 ubiquitin ligase activity.
