What is it about?
This study uses mammographic phantom images to evaluate the quality of images produced by mammography equipments. It applies digital image processing techniques to analyze these images automatically. Specifically, we created an algorithm to measure the quality of a CIRS model 11A phantom by microcalcifications and image resolution automatical detection. A scoring system is then used to calculate an Image Quality Index (IQI). The study also explores how the settings (voltage and current) and noise reduction methods in image preprocessing affect the IQI results.

Why is it important?
The innovation of this article was to analyse automaticaly the mammographic images in film-screen and digital radiographic equipments. For this purpose, the definition of an index based on the detection of microcalcifications and resolution limit, allow the objective comparison of the image quality.
Perspectives
Our findings in the year of publication contributed to enhace the knowledge of mathematical algorithms applied to automatical image quality evaluation. Even though in this moment, there are others more sophisticated, the basis that we found are very similar.
