What is it about?

The origin and development of phrase structure grammars in linguistics. Starting from immediate constituent analysis, the survey tracks the role of phrase structure grammar in the various versions of transformational and monostratal syntax. It also discusses the interfaces with phonology and semantics, the formal properties of phrase structure grammars and their relevance for natural language processing and psycholinguistics.

Why is it important?

Phrase structure grammars have been playing a central role in linguistics for nearly a century now. Understanding how they work and what they do is essential for any scholar or student of linguistics. Finding the relevant publications is an inevitable first step. This bibliography is a good starting point.

Perspectives

It was an honour to receive an invitation from the Editorial Board of the Oxford Bibliographies in Linguistics to write a contribution on 'Phrase Structure Grammars'. It involved a lot of work, but I learned a lot in the process.
