What is it about?

This poster abstract describes the synthesis of metformin (a biguanide) using cheap reagents in sufficiently large quantities for research testing the action of this drug against brain tumour cells in the laboratory.

Why is it important?

Metformin is a drug used in the frontline against Type 2 diabetes. The drug has also been shown to have anticancer properties in many types of cancers. Repurposing drugs helps get them into clinic much faster and more cheaply than would be the case for a newly developed drug. This paper describes a convenient synthesis of metformin to enable follow-up research studies of the efficacy of the drug against brain tumour cells in the laboratory to be made.

Perspectives

This poster abstract shows our preliminary work in this area. A full paper will be published shortly.
