What is it about?
We have engineered Type IE CRISPR system from E. coli and demonstrated that it can be an effective tool for programmable gene silencing. We have shown various level of gene silencing by targeting the promoter and the ORF. We also show that it is effective both when the target gene is located on the plasmid and also when it is located on the chromosome. We also show silencing of multiple genes.

Why is it important?
There was no easy method available for gene silencing in bacteria. This hampered the study of the essential genes in bacteria as these genes could not be deleted or functionally mutated. We provide a facile and universal method for achieving gene silencing in bacteria.
