What is it about?
Chemicals can be assessed in different ways depending on whether the goal is to understand their hazards, control exposure, or compare their wider environmental impacts. This study applies these approaches to a representative cosmetic formulation and shows how regulatory risk assessment and life-cycle toxicity assessment can provide different but complementary information. It proposes a practical framework for interpreting these results together, supporting more transparent decisions about chemical safety and sustainability.

Why is it important?
Chemical safety and sustainability are increasingly addressed through multiple policy frameworks, but these frameworks do not necessarily use the same criteria or answer the same questions. This can make apparently conflicting results difficult to interpret. The study demonstrates that such differences do not necessarily reflect conflicting scientific evidence; rather, they can arise from differences in assessment objectives, decision rules, and the importance given to hazard, exposure, and life-cycle impacts. By proposing a sequential framework that connects hazard screening, regulatory risk assessment, and life-cycle toxicity prioritization, the study provides a practical basis for more coherent chemical management and for implementing Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) more effectively.
Perspectives
As the author, I see this work as an opportunity to bridge two perspectives that are often treated separately: chemical safety under defined conditions of use and broader sustainability across the life cycle. One of the main lessons from the study is that different assessment methods should not necessarily be expected to produce the same answer, because they are designed to address different decision questions. I believe that recognizing these differences, rather than forcing them into a single metric, can lead to more scientifically robust and transparent decision-making. The proposed framework is intended as a practical step towards integrating established assessment approaches while preserving the scientific purpose and limitations of each one.
