This article discusses India's civilizational ideas and claims in South Asia and explains why these claims are not central to India's neighbourhood policy.

Why is it important?

Civilizational claims are becoming significant to rising powers. As India's material capacities grow, her ideational claims also show more assertiveness and confidence. Civilizational heritage is a language of expressing such claims. While India is not shy of advertising its past glory, the use of civilizational categories are troubling in the neighbourhood as such claims cannot be territorially separated. This article explains this tension.

Perspectives

As constructivist readings of Indian foreign policy are on the rise, there is a need to pay attention to ideas and their uses in the external realm. A lot is written on the religious turn to India's domestic politics. How cultural ideas permeate foreign policy also deserve reflections.
