What is it about?

We carried out a systematic review to assess how communication impacted the West African Ebola outbreak. The 2013–16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa was the largest to date with >28 000 cases and >11 000 fatalities. This review assessed reports and published articles around Nigeria and Liberia and found that community engagement and targeted health-communication to the most at-risk group were the most successful strategies. Media and social media were also very effective in the management of the outbreak

Why is it important?

During the outbreak, affected communities were vulnerable due to misinformation e.g. salt and water baths. In addition, government mistrust contributed to the risks of infection and spread. Understanding how to engage local communities and the routes to do so would help improve management of future outbreaks.
