What is it about?
Now in his 90th year, Dutch cardiologist Paul Hugenholtz helped create a vision for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). He moved to the US in the 1950s and rose through the ranks to become a Harvard professor specializing in pediatric cardiology. He returned to Europe in the 1970s and was instrumental in establishing the foundations of an institution which went on to become the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Why is it important?
Hugenholtz offers a grand and sweeping perspective on cardiology in the US and Europe, and the growth and development of the ESC from a collection of national groups to an institution at the forefront of innovation and training. It's a personal view from a fascinating career with some sharp insights and predictions for the future direction of cardiology.
