What is it about?
Carolyn Lam is a clinician–scientist, who is recognised globally for her work on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. She also has expertise in women’s cardiovascular disease, haemodynamics, echocardiography, biomarkers, and clinical trials.

Why is it important?
Women in cardiology are scare but women from outside Europe and the USA who rise to prominence in the discipline are extremely scarce. Carolyn Lam is well known for her work on heart failure and is also an advocate of the importance of dealing with regional and gender inequalities in health. She has described how the burden of heart disease is moving eastwards as countries in Asia and the Indian subcontinent modernise and the need to be ready to combat the approaching epidemic.
Perspectives
Carolyn Lam is a wonderful role model for aspiring cardiologists wherever they are in the world who aspire to a clinician-scientist role. She presents a regular podcast for Circulation - Circulation on the Run which is well-worth listening to.
