What is it about?

Many young adults who do not smoke and have relatively normal levels of cholesterol and blood pressure are still in risk for cardiovascular events. We show that low fitness can be used to identify these individual, which can help prevent future cardiovascular disease in these patients.

Why is it important?

Adding fitness to the European SCORE risk stratification model can significantly improve the accuracy of the model. This will allow 50% better risk stratification, that can be used to identify high risk patients.

Perspectives

Fitness is an important marker of high cardiovascular risk. Primary care providers should always look at the fitness level of the patient when interpreting normal exercise stress test results. In patients where the cardiovascular risk is not clear or borderline, fitness can be used to help make decision about cardiovascular treatment and prevention strategies.
