Why is it important?

The article provides an economic account to understand the diaspora's changing political position. It also contributes to the historical understanding about the responses of China's tariff autonomy in Singapore in the 1930s

Perspectives

I apply Karl Polanyi's thesis to understand the changes from his conservative 1920s and revolutionary 1930s. But Polanyi's analysis was based on the European history, my study on Singapore-China trade shows the reversal dynamics between Chinese overseas bourgeoisie and the state of China.
