T1 mapping in ischaemic heart disease

What is it about?

Cardiac MRI has the ability to characterise tissues. Individual tissues have a range of normal values, known as T1, T2, and T2*. Myocardial T1 mapping allows us to characterise the heart muscle, and allow us detect increased water content, or fibrous tissue within.

Why is it important?

T1 mapping techniques are coming into widespread use. It is timely to review the physical basis of changes in T1, and explain how this could be used to detect different myocardial diseases, in particular ischemic heart disease.
