A model of polio transmission incorporating waning immunity and transmissible vaccine

What is it about?

The polio eradication initiative has relied heavily on the use of oral polio vaccine. Oral polio vaccine is very effective in preventing infection for a short duration after immunization and transmissible allowing for boosting among the populations. We developed a mathematical model that explores how waning immunity and vaccine transmission affects polio elimination under different transmission scenarios.

Why is it important?

By identifying the importance of waning immunity and vaccine transmission, we identify that in regions with very high transmission, it van be very difficult to achieve long-term polio elimination. We also that show that asymptomatic individuals who have been reinfected play an important role in polio transmission.
