What is it about?

This book provides an in-depth case study on the Jewish matrix of early Christian mysticism. Whilst not neglecting biblical sources, Alexandrian precedents, and fourth century theological debates, it undertakes a heuristic comparison between Gregory of Nyssa’s tabernacle imagery in Life of Moses and the rich Jewish tradition of heavenly ascent texts, running from the pseudepigraphic apocalypses to the Hekhalot literature. The result is a well-rounded, nuanced understanding of Gregory’s exegesis, in which mysticism, theology, and politics are intertwined.
