What is it about?

German cardiologist Karen Sliwa has been working in South Africa for many years and is well-placed to offer an insight into the field. She is known for her work in heart failure and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the peripartum period as well as the unique Heart of Soweto and Heart of Africa studies.

Why is it important?

Prior to Sliwa’s seminal Heart of Soweto and subsequent Heart of Africa studies which map a high incidence of heart disease and prevalence of risk factors, information on cardiac health of the population of Africa was limited. Sliwa has an in-depth knowledge of the current state of cardiology not just in South Africa, but across the continent in general.

Perspectives

In spite of all difficulties and challenges presented by working in sub-Saharan Africa, Karen Sliwa's positive outlook and can-do, will-do attitude makes this a heart-warming read.
