What is it about?

Barbara Casadei is British Heart Foundation (BHF) Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, UK, and President-Elect of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). She will take over the role as ESC President in 2018 and will become the first woman in the history of the ESC to achieve this role.

Why is it important?

As one of only a few women in the UK to achieve a position of seniority in cardiology, she is well placed to discuss the gender gap and some of the disadvantages and opportunities women face in trying to build a career in cardiology.

Perspectives

Judith Ozkan

Barbara Casadei is one of the UK's most high-profile cardiologists - male or female. Her observations about the process of 'attrition' which can cause women to be lost or sidelined in their careers is insightful and relevant for any profession.
