What is it about?

This observational study measured the implementation effectiveness of three geographically diverse hospitals on their ability to implement the current published colorectal SSI bundle in the US. Despite the high-level of evidence supporting each bundle element, we found a lack of effective adoption across most of the measured elements. This study discusses the individual element adoption rates as well as effective methods to implement change in an institution, and the patient and facility benefits of standardizing to evidence-based recommendations.

Why is it important?

By focusing on SSI reduction through product and practice standardization and implementation of the published colorectal guidelines, this will result in better patient outcomes along with appreciable cost savings for hospitals. The American College of Surgeons / Surgical Infection Society, CDC, WHO, and other SSI guidelines are researched and show the standard of care that all healthcare institutions should achieve.
