What is it about?

We have shown that CO, a gas transmitter, plays a key role as a mediator, along with NO, in fine turning the Ca2+ signaling between the two Ca2+ second messengers NAADP and cADPR.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that CO plays a role in bridging the gap between the Ca2+ signaling messengers during insulin secretion in pancreatic b-cells. Thus, HO-2-activating agents or CO donors have the potential to be used as a therapeutic agent for diabetic patients. .
