What is it about?

Surface quality of cast irons was evaluated using 3D interferometry.

Why is it important?

We show the counting of folded metal occurrence for real samples of cast irons, produced in proper dimensions for block engines. The findings demonstrate that the level of folded metal depends on the plastic deformation, which in its turn is dependent on the microstructure.

Perspectives

The use of more resistant cast irons, such as compacted graphite, is possible wothout loss in terms of surface quality.
