What is it about?

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is a tool used for magnetic characterization of materials: the so-called "XMCD sum rules" are used to determine the spin (Sz) and orbital (Lz) momentum. This article explains that these sum rules for the series of 3d transition metal materials have an accuracy that depends on the element of interest. For example for the Mn2+ the sum rule for Sz can be off by 50% and even the sign of Sz can be wrong, while for Cu2+ it is 100% accurate.
