What is it about?

Predators were one of the problems with Sandfish rearing. Sandfish cultured in a multitrophic system show that mangrove snail Cerithidea sp and nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were two predators that can attack sandfish. Generally Sandfish can recover from wounds within one week for small wounds, while larger wounds need 2 to 3 weeks. The sandfish that have wounds too large and severe usually die. Nile Tilapia attacks were generally not deadly. Death only occurs if the wound is too deep and causes internal organs to come out.

Why is it important?

High mortality are the two main problems faced in sea cucumber cultivation. This paper shows for the first time that even in controlled media, predators such as mangrove snail Cerithidea sp and nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus can attack sea cucumbers, even though handling has been done well. Predators can enter the rearing or cultivation media with Sandfish obtained from the wild. Likewise, the object of cultivation, where tilapia which has been considered a herbivore, can attack sandfish.

Perspectives

This paper introduces two causes of sea cucumber death in multitropic cultivation systems. This paper is a preliminary result of a multi-year study to find out a productive and environmentally friendly to overcome environmental problems due to intensive shrimp farming which has caused a decrease in carrying capacity caused by high organic matter content at the brackish water bottom. Sea cucumbers was one of the alternatives that can reduce these organic materials, unfortunately until now, sea cucumber mortality in ponds is still high, so an appropriate alternative cultivation model is studied, one of which is a multitropic model.
