Making music without a membrane loudspeaker: how a few conductive wires, a perforated (metallic) grid, and some high voltage make a totally transparent, membraneless, loudspeaker (aka. corona discharge loudspeaker). Our new paper published in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics is out!

Why is it important?

We present a new loudspeaker technology allowing making sound without resorting to any membrane, in a much powerful manner. The corona discharge loudspeaker combine a heat (monopolar) source and a force (dipolar) source, shaping its characteristic cardioid radiation pattern.

Perspectives

This membrane-less sound generation technology, presenting interesting electroacoustic efficiency, and a very low total harmonic distortion, is likely to become a key element in future active sound absorption concepts.
