What is it about?

Reseach with application of AFM can be less costly and more flexible! We explain how to fabricate your own custom AFM cantilever, keeping low costs and selecting its suitable features: material and diameter of the tip, torsional and longitudal stiffness.

Why is it important?

First, a lot of money may be saved. Second, very soft (e.g. biological) samples may be studies using AFM. Third, appropriate material and shape of the cantilever can be selected - thus, measurements related to friction become more realistic. (While using standard cantilevers the tip is very sharp and can be made of few materials only).


I hope our article will help many engineeres and researchers to design and fabricate their own AFM cantilevers, and in this way considerably broaden the scope of the performed measurements, saving a lot of money at the same time!
