After Scott

What is it about?

In this contribution to a forum in honor of James Scott, I offer a personal and therefore admittedly highly selective reading of his work in relation to broader political developments and my own empirical work in Hungary. I aim to go beyond some of the well-known critiques of his concepts and to identify how his insights can be used to develop productive pathways for the future of the anthropology of the state.
