What is it about?
This was the precursor paper that led to the proposal in 2000 (DOI: 10.1086/312423) and 2001 (DOI: 10.1086/322862) to build an array, now known as the Event Horizon Telescope, that would be able to create an image of this black hole at mm wavelengths.

Seeing the shadow created by a black hole would allow us---for the first time since general relativity was founded a century ago---to test some of its predictions in the strong field limit.
