Why is it important?

This article, and the series it is a part of, tells an important perspective in the field of geoscience. While highlighting important and innovative research, it also shines a light on the barriers faced by a significant portion of the scientific community based on gender by telling individual stories. This series of articles appears at an important time as the #metoo movement is bringing increased visibility to the treatment of women in many fields, including academia.

Perspectives

This article is important to me because it shows that broader picture of the research I am doing, instead of the narrow article-level perspective that is so common in science. It also gives me a forum to discuss upcoming research plans.
