Why is it important?

This article explains that the image of the sailor was very popular because it combined all the aspects of masculinity considered most attractive to society at the time.

Perspectives

I got hooked on depictions of sailors when I was working on ideas about fathers in the Georgian period. The sailor's farewell and return is so evocative of the tender father that I just had to do more research into images of sailors. I realised this was only one version and decided to examine how all the different versions fitted together.
