What is it about?

In 2012, Ontario passed the Accepting Schools Act, which protected students' ability to establish, name, and run gay-straight alliances in public and Catholic schools. Drawing from student speeches and letters, we reflect on the aims of the student activism that led to this legislation.

Why is it important?

This work can help us think about how queer youth both refuse and make use of dominant narratives about them to advocate for things that are important to them. This work can also contribute to understandings of the social cost of activism for high school students.

Perspectives

As I was one of the youth involved in this activism, this project has allowed me to reinsert the voices of the activists into the story of how Ontario Catholic schools came to have gay-straight alliances. I hope readers will find it thought-provoking and useful for thinking about youth activism beyond this specific case.
