What is it about?
Disparity in the duration of unemployment among university graduates in such a way that some of them are more likely to secure graduate-level jobs in the labour market than others is an issue that needs urgent attention. This study examined the role of certain demographic characteristics including course of study, type of university attended and gender in explaining unemployment duration for university graduates in Nigeria.

Why is it important?
The findings show that most of the graduate respondents, irrespective of course of study, type of university attended and sex, experienced long duration of unemployment. But, more importantly, the study shows that duration of unemployment differed significantly i) among graduates of different courses of study with graduates of Engineering and Medicine having the least duration of unemployment. ii) among graduates of federal, state and private universities with graduates of private universities having the shortest unemployment period. However, gender differences did not significantly affect unemployment period
